How far will the local PD go to retrieve a stolen handgun?

Okay, someone took my .38, and I KNOW who, and this goof shot an above-ground swimming pool with it which the owner hopefully reported to the police, and all this happened in the same town. I'm guessing that the police don't have probable cause to do a search but is it likely that they'd at least question this twit?
